Road Safety Advisory Panel's Report 2011

UK Registered Charity 1054640

Summary

Robert Jackson - Chair of the Road Safety Advisory PanelThe report for 2011 of the Association's Road Safety Advisory Panel presented by its Chairman, Bob Jackson, to the Annual General Meeting on 18th January 2012 covered the main activities with which the Road Safety Advisory Panel had been involved during the year. By no means does it cover the whole range of work which was undertaken during the year both by the Group itself and those individuals who act on behalf of the Association in its road safety effort.

The Road Safety Advisory Panel is mindful of:
  • those driver⁄riders who are involved in crashes whilst under the influence of alcohol.
  • the continuing number of casualties which arise from people travelling in cars without wearing seat belts or, in the case of children, those who are inappropriately restrained.
  • those drivers⁄riders who choose to drive at inappropriate or excessive speeds.
Target Groups for reduction in casualties:
  • newly qualified (predominantly young people) between the ages of 17 and 25 where lack of experience is a significant factor.
  • those who "Drive for Work" where often management systems fail to take account of the additional exposure and risks to which driving for work brings.
  • motorcyclists who are frequently involved in single vehicle crashes often arising from loss of control or where they are hit by drivers who fail to see them.
Key elements in the Report:
  • Structure and membership of the Road Safety Advisory Panel
  • The Strategic Framework for Road Safety
  • The UN Decade of Action
  • Vision & Driving
  • The escorting of abnormal loads
  • Modernising Driver Training
  • Consultations and the work of the Road Safety Advisory Panel
  • Membership & Representation of external bodies
